View Full Version : Cleaning Texas Holey Rock
I was at a landscape shop this past weekend getting some rocks for a landscape job I am working on. They had some pallets of Texas Holey Rock. I bought 50+ pounds of the stuff for just under $5. I am very stoked, as I took my time digging through the pallets and picked out 5 pretty cool looking pieces. Now I need to know how to clean it and pre it to put in my 30 gallon, soon to be African tank. :D

I just threw mine in the back of the pickup and took it down to the carwash. I hit it with the rinse (no soap) then took it back to the house.
If you want it as white as possible you can soak it in bleach for a week or two, then rinse it really, really well. I didn't care about the color so I skipped this part.

Yes, but Chet has to live in Texas. An Okie just won their state lottery the other day, so some of that luck must rub off.

Hey Jonah,
I just noticed that you live in Oklahoma. All of my relatives live in Oklahoma except for my brother and my aunt. They live in Tulsa (my relatives- not my brother and aunt) to be exact.
Which part of Oklahoma are you from?
Hey are there any good places to get Texas Holey rock in Ok? I might be able to convince my wife for a detour to Texas before we go home but I doubt it. As I remember, it wasn't too far from Tulsa to Texas but I was ten at the time (then my family who lived in Texas moved to Tulsa).

I'm originally from San Diego, California, but we moved to Mustang, just outside of Oklahoma City 8 years ago. I just got back from the Dallas area about an hour ago. It took about 4 1/2 hours each way. Tulsa is about 2 hours from here. I bought my rock at a landscaping yard in OKC, but it isn't the high grade stuff that you see in show tanks. Most of the holes are much smaller. Then again, it also cost about 9 cents a pound. I had to go through tons of rock to find the pieces I ended up with. I actually have a piece just sitting in my garage right now that weighs about 75lbs. It was a left over after I re-landscaped my tanks.
Sean (a member) lives over on the other side of OKC and has a nice selection of rock, some with the big holes. I think he charges about a dollar a pound though, but at least you wouldn't have any shipping costs. He's got a web site that has pictures and dimensions of his pieces.
