Are these fish part of Jeff Rapps breeding stock? The tanks setups remind me of his breeding tanks that I've seen in pictures.
is Zaliosum some type of red devil or somthing like that?

Yes, Karl. Amphilophus zaliosum is a species closely related to the Labiatus and Citrinellus. At 8" that male is probably at his max size. In the wild they usually range from 4-6" but can grow a little larger. They are rumored to be the most aggressive of the complex, but this information has been circulated by people who have never kept Zaliosum, so it may or may not be true.
Maybe Mojo can comfirm or deny what I just said, seeing as how he may have a bit of experiance with that species?

Wow, that first picture looks rather similiar to my butterkoferi.
The main difference between this and the other species of Amphilophus is that they are open water swimmers as opposed to their bottom dwelling Amphilophus sub species. They have been touted as being very aggressive...and for this particular class of Cichlid that's saying a lot. Only time will tell for sure.
Paul Loiselle has even gone as far as saying that he doubted that this particular Amphilophus species would ever make it into the hobby because there are too many other "desirable" Amphilophus species available to make it worthwhile to the breeder. This will go the way of the Barred Citrinellum that was so hard to get a year ago...and had hobbyists paying outrageous prices for specimens. I would guess that within the year they will be readily available.
The one thing I particularly like abot this fish is that when you get one, you get the real deal. Ulike the Red Devils that have been crossed back and forth between Labiatus and Citrinellum and sold in the hobby...until you don't know what the hell you have...this one won't. Dr, George Barlow was the first to identify this species in '76. He noted that they don't mate with the other members of the species complex.

Thanks for the info, Mojo.
So is Rapps going to begin breeding this species? Is that male a fresh import or has he been been a captive fish for a long time?
Thanks

Your Buttikoferi has a pointed snout, elongate body, trailing fins, and is grey on grey striped?
