I guess it depends on how big your tank is. If you use under gravel filters you could get a couple power heads and then get a power filter that hangs on behind the tank. That is apretty standard setup.
I have gone a little insane with filtration on my 90 gallon. I have an Ehiem Professional II canister filter, on the back a whisper 2 and Penguin 125. Plus two Penguin powerheads going into my Under Gravel Filter. This is a bit extreme I think. The reason why I have so many filters is because I am about to get a 125 and I want to get the filters biological ready.
I will problably move the canister and buy a behind the tank power filter (or two) for the 125 gallon.
I would recommend and Ehiem, however they run int the $150-$200 range. But they are sweet. German engineering at its finest.
