View Full Version : Help! Nitrite Killer

I was away on unexpected business for 4 days. I came home to two barely moving fish. One has died. My Nitrite level is off the chart...how can I save the remaining fish? I am new to Cichlids and am in the middle of cycling. Will a half tank water tank be enough?

Probably not. You can change nearly all the water--80-90%--without affecting the cycling process. I'd change 80 to 90%, then test, then repeat as often as necessary. Also: Go very light on any feedings: Once every 2-3 days won't hurt them.

Yep, You also might want to remove any food left on the bottom of the tank.

I did the water change. The NItrite level is a little lower. The remaining fish appears to be paralyzed in the back region (his front flippers are moving, that is the only way he is able to swim). Is there anything else I can do to save him?

Thank you so much for your help.

Hi. Unfortunately, the only "treatment" for nitrite poisoning I am aware of is the massive water changes already noted.
