Personal preference really sand or gravel works fine.

I like play sand from home depot as it is under $5 and easy to vaccum

Yes, it's really just your preference. Black sand is VERY nice in my oppinion. And although it is expensive, it shouldn't be that much for your sized tank. See if you can't find some pictures of tanks with black sand.
