Just take care. I've heard that those crayfish are marked targets as soon as they shed their shell. They go through a period where the new shell is soft, and before it hardens, your Africans may make a snack of lil' yabbie.

well he's lil but still bigger than they are, i was prepared for the shell-shedding after owning crustaceans previously, but thanks for the concern :)

i have about 200000000 of those (yabbies) just down the road.
some of them i have caught were close to 13cm.
They taste as good as they look!

C'mon on down, the waters warm & the critters that kill ya are mostly friendly!
One thing to watch with yabbies, is they will kill other crustaceans, & can kill fish. I've inadvertantly fed a few yabbies with my prized fish! They get em at night when they're sleeping.
Sorry if that freaks you dude, but keep the yabby smaller than the fish & you shouldn't have prob's!

Just to scare you more, my friend bought 5, & 1 was a psycho, killed & ate the other 4 over 2 days. Used to snip the air hose lines, & attack my friend when she tried to repair them. This sucker wld fully have it's claw out thru the gap in the cover glass trying to get at ya. The sucker was evil. One day she came home to find it'd pulled her string bag into the aquarium that was hanging on the back of the door, with her walkman in it. She said, "that was the day she had the smallest cocktail sandwich ever". Cooked it up, shelled it & had it with fresh bread & cocktail sauce. I learned a new definition for evil that day:nervous: .... & treat my friend well...

yeah usafschue come down, nothing will kill ya, just as long as you stay indoors that is! lol j/k dude.
you know its funny, most of us australians wouldnt think of keeping a yabbie as a pet but over sea's such as the usa and stuff would because they dont have them there, so what if some person from lets say south america found out we keept oscars as pets, would he laugh at us, seeing as they are good eating over there, i found a web page once with this guy who caught a 35cm oscar and was showing how to cook them on a fire and stuff, couldnt belive it!
gives me an idea, NEW THREAD!!!

I prefer my crawdads boiled New Orleans style with lots of spices. They need to still be in the shell when they come to my table. You shell 'em and eat 'em. Good Stuff!!

He's way cool!!! I had one in a tank long time ago when I was little...he escaped in the night...never found him....(my brother reminded me that I DO sleep with my mouth open....)

LOL

How did you get such a nice clear pic?

usafschue

I use a sony cybershot 3.2, but to get the clear pic, I turn the room light off, leave the tank light on, and take it from a slight angle to avoid washing out the soft aquarium light

Cool! I have a 4.1 mp camera..and I still can't take clear pics of my fish!! We should start a thread on that!
I'll have to try your advice.

We've got a few threads on that. Do a search of "photo", "photos", "photography" and you'll find some discussion on the subject.

A tripod can help you get a more clear picture.

The comment was aimed at jennigypsy. Tripods are pretty cheap at walmart. Most people move a little when they take a picture, hardly noticible, but a tripod takes care of that. I got that advice from a friend of mine who's a professional photographer.

I've got the Sony Cybershot 3.2 DSC P-52. I wish I got the P-72 instead, it's got a macro lens.

uh....Calvino...If you are looking for a response to a specific questoin, try posting a thread in the appropriate forum....People tend to ignore threads that are more than a year or two old (like this one)
