I have a 125g tank that I want to add some more rock to. I was just wondering is there a certain rock that is bad for a tank? I know rocks can leach harmful stuff into the water. But if I boil the rocks or let them sock in hot water is any rock ok?

rocks with a lot of metal(shiny, metallic flecks, rust), and rocks that may have been exposed to chemicals, pesticides or soaps are no good. rocks with extremely sharp edges should be filed. falling rocks are especially bad.

The ones outside that might have been exposed can I just boil them or clean them somehow?

i, personally, wouldn't risk it, but many people collect rocks from outside.

I would stay away from bedrock & as sgypsy says rusty colored rocks with metallic flakes. If you do use outside rocks, definately boil them and scrub them with a wire brush. Test them for metals by using vinegar. If it fizzes don't use it... If you start experiencing sediment in your tank remove them immediately....

i think that the vinegar test is for calcium carbonate?

If the tank if for Rift Lake fish that would be a good thing.

yes, it would. some of the older literature warns against adding rocks to aquariums that would harden the water and raise the ph--pre-african cichlidkeeping.

I love those old aquarium books. Everything's UGF and pH of 7.:rofl2:
