View Full Version : Tips on going from coral to sand?

Hello all,

I got a (cycled) 110g tank with fine crush coral, and would like to switch over to pool filter sand (silica sand). In the tank i have 16 small/mid size malawi cichlids (labs, electric blues, P. Acei, Demasoni).

Was wondering how should i go about this with the least stress to my fish?
Any tips would be great?

I was just going to wait till i had to do a good size water change, take out 50% of the water, remove rocks, scoop out coral, but how should i add the sand without making a mess of the tank, since i have no place to move my fish, can it be done? i know silica sand is heavier then playsand so im hoping it will sink fast.

thanks for the help

rinse the sand several times, and there will be minimal clouding. be careful not to dump huge amounts of sand in all at once as wet sand is very heavy. you could buy a couple of rubbermaid tubs to put the fish in if you want to take them out.
