why not try some loaches? some dojo would do well, and they're much more interesting/active than most cats

I don't know about dojo loaches, but yoyo loaches and clown loaches are generally capable of taking care of themselves. I would recommend a group of 4 or 5 yoyo loaches. They are a blast to watch, and my GT doesn't even bother with them.

If you want to keep it Central American your only choice is Rhamdia catfish. Let me know if you find some.

I keep my ph at 8.0 so what ever I get it would need to be able to tolerate high ph.All I can think of is synodontis. Are there any others?

Most Catfish are tough as nails and can tolerate awful conditions so I wouldnt worry too much about that. I have a hoplo cat thats not too pretty but takes a lot of crap from my male firemouth every day but most of the time it doesnt even really bother him. He has pretty tough scales. I also have a striped raphael cat that hides almost all the time but no one messes with him. Although both are from south america so good luck on finding some central american cats. And both full grown get to about 5 to 6 inches, I would think that size would fit in with what you have. You have to be careful with catfish because many will grow to a couple of feet long. Id love to get a tiger shovelnose but the dam things just get too big.

tiger shovelnose are badass.thats my biggest problem finding something that wont get 2 feet long.i keep synodontis with my africans so i want to get something differant.i might try the loach idea.i like clown loaches.

Leiocassis siamensis.

Asian bumblebee catfish. You can get them at Petsmart pretty readily and they are a cool catfish.

I keep them in a couple of my tanks and actually see them more than they are given credit for.

I am sure you know this, but your tank is pretty small for the long run hey?
