Ok. I'm acquiring a new 40 gal tank and have many questions. My eventual plan for the tank is a pair of firemouths, a jack dempsey, a texas cichlid, and target fish, that i'm thinking should be a small shoal of silver dollars. I'm pretty sure i'm going to need a pleco, but am unsure as to the size. This fish stocking seems a bit much, seeing that the texas cichlid and jack dempsey are both very large and agressive, and the silver dollars also grow considerably large for a schooling fish.

I would also like to eventually like to place java moss and java fern, although i know it is questionable, and some type of floating plant.

My last question is in regards to filtration. I'm interested in possibly using a canister filter in tandem with an over the back filter. Can anybody shed some light on these questions?

Sounds like you answered your first question.

The java fern and moss will probably be okay if you attach it to some driftwood. Most of the damage done by cichlids to plants involves digging them up and that would bypass that problem.

It's always a good idea to keep an extra filter on a tank. It helped me this weekend when one of my Emperors failed. I've got a fluval404 on the same tank.
