I was wondering if this would work as a good fast tank polisher. I was thinking of connecting my powerhead to a piece of pvc pipe with a bunch of holes in it then wrapping foam from a fabric store around the tube. Do you guys think that this is a good idea? Any recomendations on what foam to get? Thanks.

Yeah, a lot of Euros make similar filters (and not just to polish).

I've done it similarly. What I find works it polyester batting (fabric store) on the outside with a piece of micron felt around the pipe. I just use rubber bands to keep it on and throw the whole thing away about once a week (the micron can be washed and reused if you like, but I'm going for speed of cleaning).

If you want to reuse things, get some 3/4" sponge (sheet form) from bigalsonline.com (you can get the mocron felt there too). Use the sponge on the outside and just wring it out to clean it.

Regardless of what you use, the micron felt is needed for the polishing.

Or you could just buy a "quick filter" (made for aquaclear powerheads).

Thanks for the help. Is big Al's cheaper than a fabric store usually?
Thanks.

Chris,

You need to start a thread in the DYI section of the forum. You have lot's of great ideas on how to do things cheaper than buying from LFS.

I am constantly amazed that with the batting and micron pad the water almost seems to disappear. thanks again

red64......... You need to use both stores. Big Als will supply the 3/4" sponge sheets (the kind that is safe for aquarium use). The fabric store provides the batting (look for 1" thick baby bumper batting; there will be some waste, but cutting is easier since it is in one long narrow roll).

ticman........ perhaps I will!
