I have read that you can feed fry finely crushed flake food. Do you? if not what do you feed them.

For mine crushed flake, ground up NLS, cyclops, depending on what kind of fry we're talking about. Whatever you feed use something like a turkey baster or one of the plastic droppers that come in some test kits in order to get the food down to them.

One of my LFS' sells Aquadine duraflake which is easy to hand crumble and feed to fry as well as use for full grown cichlids! http://www.aquadine.com/index.html#

What I do is I take all the food I have, put more of the staple food in and crush it up in a pill crusher and feed it to them, not a lot because it’s messy. There is also liquid fry food you can buy.

A lot does depend on the type of fry you are feeding. However, crushed foods intended for adult fish lack sufficient protein for fry, and lack the fats they need for fast growth. I've found that newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii work for just about any Cichlid fry. There are only a handful that require smaller foods, and even vegetarian fish have carnivorous fry, believe it or not. Frozen bbs, the cyclopeze frozen, or decapsulated brine shrimp eggs, all are high protein foods, but they don't move like live bbs, which is a major attracting factor when fry are feeding. Egg yolk powdered up will also serve if you're cheap (like me!), and is very high in fats that fry need for early growth. In fact, it is one of the base foods used to raise discus fry away from their parents (mixed with a few other things, of course).

I keep a few rocks in an outside pond for feeding fry when they are first released. Since the fry are skittish for the first few days, I place a rock in their tank and they graze at will. Sometimes I’ll put a length of anacharis in as well, which they also graze on.

After a few days and they become less fearful, I feed them NLS growth food and crushed NLS flake with garlic. Once they associate you with food, you are home free. I have never fed them baby brine but they do get their share of live stuff off the rocks and anacharis.
