cichlid popeye

One of my cichlids has a protruding white patch on his eye, any suggestions for treatment? Thanks..

he could have scratched it on a rock or in a fight. the other possibility is poor water quality. how often do you change your water? i would add 1 tablespoon per five gallons of aquarium salt to the tank(be sure to dissolve the salt in water before adding it to the tank), and treat the tank with melafix which is an herbal antibacterial agent which promotes healing.
