I'm pretty sure you've got an auratus. Unless my eyes deceive me (or the pic does :) ), your fish has narrow white stripes next to each black stripe. That would be an auratus. Plus, the body shape of your fish doesn't seem quite right for a julidochromis.

Just a question, please: Was permission obtained to use the copyrighted photographs?

Thank you

I'm curious if permission is required to link to a photograph on some ones web page. I thought that it was acceptable as long as you didn't copy the picture without permission and then put it somewhere else.

If I'm wrong, then I'll have to change the way I do things as well.

(This'll be a bit lengthy since the matter interests--or ought to, anyway--more than a few folks)

Yes: It's a violation of copyright law to display on any site and through any means an image that's not yours in the absence of permission from the copyright holder. In fact, "hotlinking" an image (which may also be the case in the current thread) may represent double injury to the copyright holder: Not only is his photograph being used without permission but also money is being taken out of his pocket by another's use of the bandwidth he's paying for.

And, unlike with snippets of text, any Fair Use provision is virtually impossible to apply to photographs.

Best advice I can offer, folks, is to get permission to use images directly from their owners (crediting them alone is not sufficient): Most people are glad to give permission but would like to be asked first--and credited for their work.

And while hotlinking, unlike copyright infringement, isn't in and of itself against the law, it's nevertheless bad practice: We have plenty of bandwidth on this network; please prefer to use ours instead.

I hope my tone isn't accusatory; it's not meant to be: I do realize that many folks are unfamiliar with the Internet and intellectual property.

(And thanks, Kevin, for the question: Not everyone would be conscientious enough to ask it.)

uh-ohhhh...you mean that all those times that i provided a link to a pic on another site, i was doing a bad thing?

No, SGypsy: Providing a text link, even to an image file, is different for a couple of reasons:

1. No image is displayed here, hence no copyright infringement.

2. Bandwidth from the remote server everytime the page here is loaded is not being sapped by an image display.

Of course, there are sites which do not allow even links that appear as text here to their image files. In those cases, it's best to not use them, of course.

linking to other sites is legit, as long as the user is required to go to the original site the pic is listed on.
