Yesterday, as a child was staring at the tank he said, "I saw a baby!" and from my desk I said, "No, it's just a baby snail on the rocks." He says, "Do snails swim?" lol...I ran to look and sure enough a little 1/2 inch fry..found another later.:xmas1:

We never saw any fish holding or witnessed any holding behaviors. Maybe we didn't notice because this would be the first batch of fry for the female and the number of fry would be smaller?? Can that happen?

We are not sure if it's the platytaeniodus sp. "red tail sheller" or the xystichromis sp. Kyoga flameback." The fry are gray in color. I'm guessing the latter because one of the females didn't eat for a couple days about a month ago. They are also much bigger than the shellers.

We are very excited.. I will try to get pictures but they are very adept at hiding ;)

ps...will get to posting more on our project...time has been an issue.

Well how did the first batch of fry go?

Well there are two for sure and they are alive and well. They even survived 10 days without food over winter break AND without being eaten! ;):)
We are watching closely for any signs of holding females...when that happens we will have to have a better plan than just letting them spit and survival of the fittest!
Thanks for asking Alex.

Well....

It's going fine as far as fish health, the babies are still alive and out amongst the other fish. I have not seen any other fry. Last year we had students come down to care for the fish and it worked well for a while...everyone loves the fish :) But it was hard for me (and there was no teacher in charge), in the office, to manage the kids while they were there (if you don't know, a school office is BUSY!). I think it really needs to be an after school program...AND this year, our regular academic program includes enrichment classes so it could fit right in, BUT I need help putting a program together. I have fish at home, I know basics but I know nothing about breeding. Just this week my schedule has eased up and I can get moving on some ideas I've had for a while...

Thanks for asking! I'll keep this thread posted :)
