A "she", laying eggs regularly.

at least 6 inches,

changes colors,

murderer of many, many yellow and blue african cichlids,

calm, not skittish.

She's taken over the tank, and the other fish are freaked. Killed all fish exept those less than 1/4 her size.

I had the tank highly populated, then the africans got big after a few years. She just started taking out the biggest one and working her way down. I didn't realize that she was the problem till they were mostly all dead.

Now I want to repopulate the tank, but I want less vicious fish to have a chance.

The stupid africans won't hide from her, they just hang at the top of the tank like a pinata.

I could be wrong, but "She" doesn't look to be African.

she's not...maybe a flowerhorn? harrassed fish hang out at the top because that 's the only place that they are allowed to be.

I don't think she's african, everyone who has seen her says that she's a south or central american.

She's been called red terror, red devil.

Anyway, I guess I don't really need to know what she is, but instead, what I can do to discourage the high murder rate and repopulate the tank.

Is overpopulating a good way to overcome this?
Should I add more fake plants and obstacles so that they can hide better?

Now the tank is underpopulated, so any fish with bright colors gets her undesired attention.

you should put her in a separate tank.

Is there a good way to trade fish with someone who wants her?

THAT IS DEFINITELY NOT A READ DEVIL! Red devils have a cerebral hump. I just lost mine at 18 years old... poor girl. Lived a long lonely life in her 30 gal tank after she ate everything else.

If I had to guess based on coloration and body shape, I would say it is definately from the genus Cichlasoma (south american) possibly hellebruni. They can have a red head and blue body with the black stripe down the side, but get rather large. If he gets to 30cm, you'll know thats it.

That is a Vieja species, probably bifasciatum or fenestratus. Or a hybrid between any of the other species. As you can see they are pretty aggressive and can hold their own with any african. They are herbivores too, and would make ideal tankmates for mbuna if they weren't so crazy. The males get huge, with huge nuchal humps and often amazing colors, but yours I think is a female.

Male bifasciatum

If it is then it's definitely got some Vieja in it, which wouldn't suprise me. Flowerhorns are a melting pot of cichlid genes, with new species being added every year...

This feesh has no forehead bump at all, just lots of red color.

I've added several fish to the tank and moved stuff around so they can hide from her. Seems to be working ok now.

The last of the africans is now out of the protective cage and settling into the "house" of rocks, hopefully it's new refuge.

i think she'a a red terror, not a red devil:) well i'm not really sure but this is a pic i got in the net

it's definitely not a red terror, red devil etc. it appears to be some type of Paratheraps (formerly Vieja) or a Paratheraps hybrid. The body shape looks very much like a fenestratus but I'm certainly not the best at ID'ing Paratheraps. :D

By the way, the picture Cypherman posted doesn't, imo anyway, look like any type of flowerhorn. It looks just like a male Bifasc. :)

Jason is definitely correct.

markinreno, where are you located?

Although your picture is blurry, your fish does appear to be a Paratheraps fenestrata (also know as Vieja fenestratum.) But your fish isn't any regular Fenestrata. It looks as if you might have what is known as a "pink fenestrata", which would explain the unusual pink/red coloration which runs down her back and is mottled through out her sides. The date on the picture is old, so how does she look now? Has the lighter color or dark stripe on her side been replace with more pink?

If you are anywhere near me or if you are willing to ship I would like to have her if you still want to trade.

Well, then smack my head too cause I sure didn't notice. :rofl2:

There's been a plethora (just love using that word:D ) of old threads being drudged up...not just on this site but on about 4 or 5 others that I'm registered to. Maybe it's a New Year's thing. :drink:
