View Full Version : Archer fish
Has anyone ever seen these guys eat crikets???
It is incredible. I saw them in a driftwood filled display tank at the lfs. It is amazing the accuracy as they shout water at the crickets to knock them off the driftwood and eat them off the water. If anybody has not seen them you should check it out as these things are truly out of this world.
Oh yeah and don't worry I am not getting them I am still cichlid through and through. They are just neat to watch.....in someone elses tank.....unless.......nah my wife will kill me.

The sound of fish food chirping would keep you up at night. :)
Between the sound of my fish food chirping and the trickling of my Penguin filter, it's like I'm camping out by a stream every night. Atleast that's what I tell my wife. :)

rudy, you could set the archer fish up in a tank with some orange chromide cichlids, some knight gobies.... :sgypsy:
Yes and I could live in the garage. That is the only way I can get another tank  Life is so unfair

Hey Rudy,
How many tanks are running right now?
..you know, father's day is coming up....not too far off...
Just a modest 9 at the moment Jenni.
:)
Fathers day I really want a 125 gallon for my new fish.....a Hemibagrus wyckii asian red tail cat. I really needed to get the most aggressive freshwater fish in the world.
I am kind of a do as I say not as I do guy.

Hey Rudy, sorry to intrude on the convo, but have you thought of a Mangrove Jack, for the "most aggressive" title? I'm yet to see them successfully housed with anything in an aquarium.

I saw archer fish on the Discovery channel not too long ago and they are awesome.. I saw some at my lfs a few months ago and walked in circles wondering if I could shuffle anything around at home so I could accommodate them. Nope.. I was bummed. They are cool fish though!

I have what I think is an orange chromide getting to be 4 or 5 inches long and he is in a 37 gallon tank alone and one fish book says 4" max, so I ordered 2 red and 2 green chromides and some archer fish, but I am wondering if they are too small if they will just be devoured??? Also, I just lob in a little salt but don't know how to "optimize" it. He is a very eager eater and gets all excited when I walk into the room. Should I keep the new fish separate until they are a certain size???

Hi JF
I'll set this as a thread apart here titled "chromides and archer fish."
Barra i think your right i dont think anything can stand up against a Mangrove Jack, some guy on this forum has one and he has to feed it live rats and chickens.
i still say a barra or murray cod could give it a run

I don't Mangrove Jacks are aggressive per say. They are just absolutely predatory and will eat anything they can fit in their mouths. I have never kept one though so I can't say for sure. I would really love to have one some day.
in my new house i would love to get catch one and put it in a 200g tank, but................i dont think i can afford to feed him.

Brackish are cool. My wife only does brackish puffers. I want to set up my own 75g brackish with either a Fahaka or some scats. I love brackish. Heck, I love all fish!
