I have been growing out some Astatotilapia calliptera and one of them just started to color up, I believe this fish to be the dominant male, he's about 1-1.5" right now. The pictures arent the greatest but he is camera shy.

Looking good! Our fish came from the same group and mine are growing quickly. I've got one at almost 2" now. The lighting on their tank isn't the greatest but I'll have to take a better look for some coloring tomorrow.

The one pictured probably is a little closer to 2" actually, he is the biggest. The lighting on my growout tank isnt the best either lol.

Great looking fish. I have a bunch of breeders (2m 7f) in a 40 breeder for now. They will be moving to my 75 gallon Synodontis multipuntatus factory soon.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned the fact that this species isn't from the Victoria Basin. This is a Malawian species.

Yea. Kinda honorary Victorians.

Here are mine:

My dominant male is a bit over 5 inches now. It's a fairly aggressive cichlid.

I think I remember reading something about them being found in some parts of victoria, as well as a lot of the rivers surrounding malawi/victoria.

These are the thumbi east variant, which I believe is from malawi.

Are these about the same as vics as far as aggression?

There's always so much talk about the endemic species in Lake Malawi that a lot of people don't realize there are a couple of non-endemic Cichlids. This is one of the few, and is a pretty cool fish. I've seen them go through the local club once or twice, and last year reprinted an old article from the 1980s about them.

Baensch Atlas says they're found in Lakes Malawi and Chilwa, as well as various rivers in Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Generally much further south than the usual Victorians, it is still more closely related to those than the endemics of Malawi. When you consider that a lot of the "Victorians" in the hobby aren't from Lake Victoria, there's no reason not to group this one with them.

Mine are growing pretty quick too. The dominant male is just plain mean but promises to to be a real looker! Took this picture today during a water change so it's not the best.

Well, I decided to do a little thread necromancy (raising it from the dead). The reason? I picked up a trio of calliptera at the OCA about 10 days ago, put them in a long 30 with 4 saulosi and a lot of flowerpots (no substrate). Today I saw the larger female holding. Male looks really good, he's around 4". I took some pictures last week, but they didn't come out due to calcium deposits on the glass from fresh well water, so I need to try again.

It's a fragging Hap. I have yet to meet one that didn't breed at the rate of guppies. Still, this one is kind of cool.
