I have a 60 gal with 4 black skirt tetras, 3 corys, one golden algea eater?, and two small firemouths. One of the fire mouths has become a bully. He hangs in the middle of the tank and continually heards all the other fish, expect the algae eater, into the same corner of the tank. He does this all the time, not just during feeding.

I know many cichlids can be territorial but this one seem beyond territorial, he spends all his time corning the rest of the tank. Is this normal, can anything be done to change its behavior. Isoloation, maybe?

This type of behaviour is not unheard of, but it certainly isn't common for a Fire Mouth (which I would give a 3 on an aggression scale of 1-10). You pretty much have 2 choices. Either remove the aggressor or add more fish. As long as you have a good filtration system and you do regular water changes, adding more fish would be the best way to go (and I'm sure the most enjoyable). You only have 10 fish, 6 of which willstay very small (2"), 1 of which I don't know (do you have a latin name for this golden algae eater?) but would guess that it will reach 5", lastly the 2 Firme Mouths which will reach 5".

If you want to try to do this, let us know and we can help make suggestions as to what species and how many of each you should add.

Also, can you give the Dimensions of your tank? I'm not to familiar with that size.

Rex,

Thanks for the response. I am open for suggestions for adding more fish. My tank should be established by know. The tank is planted. I am hoping the firemouths don't uproot the plants. I don't know what the ph is put I have peat in the subsrtate and the water is tanned.

I have a firemouth which became an unbearable bully in the SA tank. I got fed up and threw him in my 45g display tank, which is stocked with Africans (pH is only 7.8 ). He's been there for about a year, and appears to be doing fine. There are skirmishes between the firemouth and the C. borleyii over who is boss, but on the 1-10 scale, I'd say agression is down to 1. All the fish in the tank have their fins and scales. This will change if something decides to breed, but I think the pH is too low for much of that.

You should buy test kits and check your water parameters.

Here are suggestions for other cichlids

Firemouth
Aureum
Ellioti
Nicaraguense
Jack Dempsey
Convict
Roberstoni
Astatheros Rostratus
Astatheros Altifrons
Fenestratum
Spilurum
Septemfasciatus
Centrarchus
Bleekeri

Let us know what you like and we can recommend the appropriate numbers. Some of these are extremely common, others may only be available from a specialist Cichlid Shop, or private breeder. Price range for these fish is $2-$15 for small fish. Do some searches and see what you like. if you like some of the more rare fish and are willing to have fish shipped to you, let me know. I may have some of my own for sale, and if not I can point you in the right direction to finding them. There are also many many others that would work. So, if you already have something in mind, throw it out there.

CJ has a good example of how keeping cichlids in numbers has cut down the aggression. Although as he said he has mostly africans, and they are usually easier to keep in numbers.

Thanks for the replies. I added a small green severum sp?. I know he will get large but from what I have read they are a fairly calm fish. It seems everybody is chasing everybody, but not being aggressive. The larger firemouth is mixing in with the others better but he still has his/her moments but it is not the constant abuse like it was.

Severums will generally reach about 8+". Your tank size should be fine. I believe I would add more fish still.
