View Full Version : Have a Huge Aquaria Site? Need a Server?

I have a new server which I’d intended to use for back-ups when I got it a month or so ago, but a few days ago I cut a deal with an (unrelated) data center/network and no longer need the box. So, for reasons even I can hardly fathom, I’m offering the exclusive use of it to any person or organization with a noncommercial aquaria-related site whose resource needs dictate a dedicated server (U.S. and Canada residents only, please). It’s free. Well, almost: I’ll require one dollar per month. No catch: I don’t want extra fees, links, advertising—just the lone dollar. (Bandwidth will have to be paid for by the entity using the server, of course; but that’s paid to the network, not to me.)

If you have such a site, simply e-mail me at tom @ cichlidforums.com with the subject heading “aquaria server” and include the URL of your site. I’ll then contact you if I believe your site requires an entire server. Be aware that I’ll ask for some site resource and personal information before handing over root access. But be assured that I will not disclose any details to anyone except to those who need to know (network engineering).

You do not have to be a member of this forum. In fact, the only persons automatically excluded are those who 1) have spammed any sites I’m associated with or 2) have illegal material on their site (e.g., copyrighted material without specific authorization from the owner) or 3) do not submit aquaria sites.

It’s indispensable that you be very familiar with the Linux environment or have an administrator who is.

Server/Network Specs:

IP of server: 66.111.38.130. Yes, it’s live and you may do a traceroute. Ping has been blocked for security reasons. The server’s physical location is in San Francisco.

Linux 8.0
Intel Celeron 1.7 GHz
512MB DDRAM
60 GB EIDE HD

Non-Throttle & Fully Burstable Bandwidth

Redundant and multi-homed (BGP-4) Gigabit Ethernet connections to Internap®, Williams®, and Cogent®.

Yep, it’s better than the server/network this site’s on (then again, so is a desktop PC connected to a DS0). But please hold the tomatoes, Forum folks: I’ll soon post news of our own.

Thanks

Tom
