Apistogramma.com Presents
In Search of the Next Great Dwarf Cichlid Speaker

Are you the next headlining club speaker on a dwarf cichlid topic?
Apistogramma.com (in cooperation with the Greater Cincinnati Aquarium Society, the host of the 2009 ACA Convention) is sponsoring a search for a speaker to present a talk at the 2009 ACA Convention in Cincinnati. The chosen speaker will receive a stipend of $250 from Apistogramma.com to offset the expense of attending the convention. The Greater Cincinnati Aquarium Society is providing the opportunity for the speaker to present a talk at the convention.

Presenting a talk at an ACA convention is excellent exposure for new speakers.
Most of the speakers at an ACA Convention are well established scientists or advanced hobbyists. Most of them give presentations at aquarium society events throughout the year. You can be a speaker too! There is no credential required! All you need is the desire to be a speaker and the ability to put together a good talk on a topic that you know a lot about. The ACA Convention draws attendees from clubs all over the world, and the exposure that a new presenter has at the event will result in many invitations to speak at other club events.

Here is how to apply for the sponsorship.
Create a CD packet of information that includes the following:

* A brief biography of you and your involvement in the hobby, speaking experience and other aquarium-related education, experiences or activities.

* A picture of yourself, preferably a head shot, that can be used for promotional purposes should you be chosen for the sponsorship.

* A one paragraph description of your talk that would appear in an event program.

* A detailed outline of your presentation. The presentation should be approximately 50 – 60 minutes long.

* Examples of the photography that you will be using in your presentation.

* Two letters of reference from within the organized aquarium hobby that will attest to your abilities as a speaker (if you have given a talk before), and your knowledgebase of dwarf cichlids and your topic. (These will not be on the CD.)

* Anything else that you think we need to choose you for the sponsorship.

The only people who need not apply are speakers who have given a talk at a previous ACA Convention. Everyone else is encouraged to apply, even if they have never given an aquarium talk before.

The topic of the presentation must be associated with South American dwarf cichlids.
The specific topic can be just about anything, so long as South American dwarf cichlids are featured prominently. Here are some ideas to consider:

* strategies for keeping and breeding dwarf cichlids

* collecting trips

* genus or group overviews

* fish behavior

* well documented and interesting research projects

* conservation

The speaker will be chosen by the donor members of Apistogramma.com, who are generously providing the money for the sponsorship.
A team of established speakers and advanced dwarf cichlid hobbyists will narrow the list to the best four or five applicants. These finalists will have their brief biography, description of their talk and photograph posted in a forum section on Apistogramma.com. Members will be invited to talk with the potential speakers through the forum’s online chat feature and posts in a forum section dedicated to each speaker. After two weeks of discussion the forum donors will be asked to vote for the person they most want to see give their presentation in Cincinnati.

Upon being chosen the speaker will receive a contract that states, in brief, that they agree to attend the 2009 ACA Convention and give their presentation. The speaker must also preregister for the event and show confirmation from the hotel for at least two nights’ accommodation at the convention as assurances that she/he will attend. The $250 stipend will be given to the speaker by Ted Judy, owner of Apistogramma.com, at the conclusion of the presentation at the convention.
