Until recently, I have only had tropical tanks, but i wanted to step it up with some cichilid. Yet, I cannot keep my water clean in the tank. The wate has developed a greenish color to it. I have changed the water 3 times, but the tank just goes back to the same green shade. What is the best way to get my tank up and running again?

Green water huh.
I wish I had green water. hehehe

Sounds like a GReen alge Bloom Try keeping your lights on less. Unless you have high mantience plants shopuldn;t be a problem..
Also Check youre water Chem for Nitrate?(could be nitrites I get them confused) if they are High take it down somehow Light+Nitrate/nitrite+Alge= Green everywhere......

I personally have the opposite problem right now I have a brown alge bloom like you would not Believe :( killed my Green mats....

So I added some more live plants :)
seems to be working anyway.....
then again I could be wrong, I often am.

Nitrates + too much light = algal bloom.

Only keep the lights on for 3 or so hours a day if that seems to be at issue.
Otherwise, where is your tank located? One of mine is a nightmare with green algae because it is directly across from a window where it gets light even before the tank lights come on.
