your going to need a test kit, they run roughly 15-20 bux for an api master kit that will do ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. i think i got the master + hardness kits 20/both

Take a cup of tank water to your lfs and ask them to test it. Get actual numbers, not good and bad. If you bought Aquarium salt then go ahead and add one tablespoon for every ten gallons of water. Make sure to dissolve it in some tank water first.

I went to my LFS and they showed the colour and it was right at the minimum for amonia and was roughly between the first colour and the second colour. So that is good. And for aquarium salt do i need to get specific aquarium salt or could i use sea salt?

ammonia should be 0, as in no change in color.

salt, any type that doesnt have iodine and anticaking agents in it. Kosher, seasalt, aor regular tablesalt without additives works.

i buy api aquarium salt just to keep on hand, its not to expensive and seems like it would be more "complete" with minerals than regular table or kosher salt. all it is really is evaporated sea salt.

Is this a new tank? It doesn't sound like it is fully cycled. Frequent (daily) water changes will be crucial if you have an ammonia spike. 50% daily would help a lot until things get under control. A fish test kit really is necessary and cheaper than buying new fish. Good Luck!
