The thread about a styrofoam background and not wanting to attach it to the back of your tank with silicone got me to thnking of alternate methods of attaching a styrofoam insert. has anyone thought of using magnets? I use a magfloat to clean the front of my tanks and when I'm not using it I just leave it on the side of the tank. It has a strong grip. Why not try to install a background with one end of the magnet fitted to the four corners and their opposites on the outside? Is this making any sense? How would the magnets react to being submerged in water for long periods of time? Perhaps you would need to cover them- maybe a plastic like the ones used to coat metal handled tools (wrenches) - i think its called liqui-wrench. Do you think it would be toxic to the fish? Why hasn't anyone thought of this before? I am not smart so logic tells me that someone has probably thought of this and ruled it out. Is it not cost-effective or are the magnets just not strong enough? Anyone have any thoughts on this? Or maybe I should just lay off the crack?

i think that it could work--you can get some superstrong magnets. i always leave mine attached to the tank, also--i never thought about what trouble it might cause---magnets have iron in them, don't they? hmmm...maybe we shouldn't leave them in.

In the words oh Phil Hartman:

Iron . . . . BAD

I use that gummy stuff you stick posters on the wall with. I've found that the blue kind is stickiest

I think it could work if you sealed as you mentioned. I've kept mag-floats in tanks for years with no problems.

I like the fact that the background could be removed!
