i have a reverse trio of labs that i am tring to identify. the males look like l. caeruleus, except that they are blue where the caeruleus is yellow. the female and fry are blue-gray with silver flecks and their anal fins are sort of a peachy yellow color. i'm not certain that they are not hybrids, and my research so far points to the chidunga--help?

Do you have any pictures you could post?

no--i don't have a camera, nor fish photography skills--i know that that would make it easier.

A bit off topic, but I bought one of those cheapo disposables to do it. The pictures aren't very good, but you can at least see the fish. Which reminds me, I meant to post some of them...

maybe i'll try it--but the female and the fry are very shy--i'll probably have to lie motionless in front of that tank for hours to get a glimpse of her, let alone a decent shot!

Aw, come on! It'll be fun and you know it! :P

 i hope you're right about that, but i could get mighty hungry lying there for hours(the tank is underneath another one, near the floor)

Maybe it's just me, but I find myself in front of the tank motionless for hrs for no reason. I just get sucked into the tank and I get almost hypnotized. I missed like a week of work once from that.

i can understand that. i can look at my fish for long periods. i was laid up for six weeks after surgery a couple of years ago, and at that time, i had 3 tanks in my bedroom. i was perfectly happy to lie there and watch my fish--i'm sure they kept me from going stir-crazy!

just saw an ad on the tiger direct website for a $40 digital camera. It is low resolution but would still take halfway decent pictures. for $200 now you can get a higher (2megapixel) resolution camera. they are a lot of fun to play around with as you don't waste any film. I am sure I am not the only one who would like to see some of your fish :!: :D

here is the website:

they have a wide selection of digital cameras- I would buy the 80 dollar 1.3 megapixel one if my wife didn't say I spend too much money on gadgets

duh-uh!!! they are melanochromis joanjohnsonae...i was had! not a labidochromis at all. to make matters worse, i'd forgotten that the joanjohnsonae had been mislabelled as l. exasperatus, and i put these little buggers in with some of my prize haps and they murdered my lithochromis rufus females. :( i kept trying to figure out why mild-mannered labs were raising so much hell. anyway, i guess i'll put them in with the mbunas, and maybe put the lanisticola in with the haps.

The Melanochromis joanjohnsonae was previously called exasperatus. And the "experts" say that they are not totally sure if it should be classified as a Melanochromis or a Labidochromis because it shares some of the traits of each genus.

But I've kept these for over eight years now and I can definately say that their personality is more Melanochromis than Labidochromis.

i can certainly attest to that!--now i'm going to have to 'fess up to james that i let his 'girls' get murdered, and see if i can talk him out of some medium sized females. :(

Hmm ... that's only about the cost of 10 rolls of film & prints.

Gypsy,
Since you figured out they weren't L. caeruleus this is a moot point. But, I was gonna tell you that they come in blue, white and white w/black stripes(maybe other colors too). Not sure if you can get leather seat covers and auto trans. for them or not. It has been a long day!

 actually, sam, i never thought that they were l. caeruleus, but i did think that they were some kind of lab. i just described them as looking very much like l. caeruleus, but in blue. i thought that the blue caeruleus only occurred in F0 fish? part of the reason that i never considered the m. joanjohnsonae is because the females are so pretty that whenever i saw a tank of juveniles, i thought that that pearly gray was the male and female coloration...never knew that the boys turned blue.
