Wierd Crushed Coral question

This was just an idea I am thinking about to keeo my PH up. I have heard of some people putting crushed coral int thei filters so they don't have to use them as substrate. How do they keep it from getting inall the filter parts? I was thinking of putting some in a coffee filter and stpling it shut. Has anyone ever tries this or something similar to this?? What do you guys think?
