I am using rocks now, but will it boost their breeding habits to put in some sand in the caves I have set upfor them?

The mbuna in my tanks breed like rabbits and all I have in those tanks is gravel. The only spawning trigger I've ever noted is water changes.

Ya I think water changes work best, some people say temp. changes also work.

There's a water temp change when I change water. I use a python and I don't set the temperature exactly to match the tank. My heaters always kick on after I change. Maybe it's all related.

unlike the haps, which prefer sand for spawning grounds, mbuna like flat surfaces

My Sci. fryeri would breed on a flat rock under the return of an AC500. Of course they didn't have any sand available since it's all rocks in that tank.
