Why do some fish swim up and down the glass or corners and some normally? I notice this mostly at night when the tank lights are off and some room lights are on. It is the same fish that do it too.

Any theories?

Some of mine do the same thing. I figure they're looking for a way out past the invisible wall.

I always thought they were trying to see around their reflection... :D

My theory is fairly simple.....

GOOO TOOO THHHHEEEEE LIIIIGGGHHHT.

Just a guess though since the tank light is off and there is light on in the room at a distance....LOL

I just had a flashback to Finding Nemo....

I'm new to cichlids, but I've had tropical fish since I was a kid, and I've worked in aquarium stores.

A lot of tropical fish, such as coryadoras will swim up and down the height of the tank if the water isn't sufficiently oxygenated.

Sometimes this behavior is also caused by stress. If they do it on a regular basis, though, it may be because the lights for all fish normally come from above them. This may be a "reorienting process for them since the overhead lights are now off and there is light still coming in from the side of the tank, where, in their little fishy minds, it should not really be.

Do they swim against the current of a filter output?

My Syns do that all the time, I think it is just to releive stress, kinda like a Golds gym for fish

my syno multi's do this...it looks pretty comical when there's three or four of them doing it side by side.
