I have 2 small JD's in a 46g tank. One is about 3 inches and the other is about 2 inches.

The small one spends most of the time hiding (or running!) from the big one. Today, however, I noticed that the small one had changed color from being mostly light to very dark, and now the big one isn't chasing it as much. They're almost playful now.

What does this mean (if anything) ????

It's possible that they have formed a pair.

I have 2 JDs, one dark and one light, but both can go to either color on occasion. I'm not sure why they pick one or the other. They could have formed a pair, but keep an eye on them. If one still gets picked on a lot you might want to get some target fish to displace the larger one's aggression.
