View Full Version : black sand substrate

I am removing my crushed coral and replacing it with Tahitian black moon sand. The PH of my tap water is around 7.0. If I take some crushed coral and put it in a bag in my filter(Aquaclear 500) will this be enough to maintain the PH over 8.0? Or should I just use one of the PH buffers?

What type of fish are you keeping? I assume Africans.

Most Africans are farm raised now, and they do not require the water parameters of their wild cousins.

Also, it may be easier to make sure the rocks you use for caves, etc. are good to buffer the water.

That said, I have done much the same as you suggest (I currently have a couple of Emperors filled with crushed coral; that is on tanks with little or no decoration).
