View Full Version : 20 Gallon Long - What are my options?

Hello there. I have a 20 gallon long aquarium that I would like to house some cichlids.

I know the rule of thumb, every gallon equals 1" of fish.

My question is, if I was to get about 5 or 6 cichlids, is a 20 gallon long tank sufficient?

What are your recommendations for a 20 gallon long tank? I am not certain what type of cichlids to get, I was just thinking of the local pet store special of 6 cichlids.

I have a 55 gallon tank but that is currently being used and wont be available for a cichlid tank for about a year or so.

At least American-wise, there is a very limited selection. Maybe a female convict, or some rams. I would make it a community tank and wait for the 55 to clear up to dive into cichs. I don't know about Africans tho.

There isn't many Africans that will fit in a 20g either..... The shelldwellers and a few smaller cave spawning Tanganyikans...no Malawians should be housed in a 20g (Not even p.lanisticola the Malawian shell dweller...)
