A "friend" from college saw my tanks at home and decided to get a tank of cichlids. Needless to say I get weekly emails asking why certain fish beat up on others, why his fish are not doing well, and so on. Very frustrating, but everyone has to start somewhere right?

Today I get this email, he bought this fish in a community tank at Petsmart and doesn't know what it is. The pic isn't very clear, but maybe one of you out there might be able to ID this bugger for him to he'll stop pestering me, heh.

It's the blue one, but any identifications of anything in the pic would be useful. I'm pretty sure the one is a red zebra, the others are too hard to tell from the camera angle what they are...

from what i can see, it looks like a male of one of the melanochromis species.

I agree with SGypsy (for once  )That torpedo shape is unmistakeably melanochromis. The only way it'd be a female is if it's M. cyaneorhabdos.

That's what I thought it would be from the shape also, I have some johannis in one tank, but the coloring just looks plain odd, so I'm thinking it might be a cross?

it may be a different race of johanni, a different melanochromis species, or it could be a cross.

"community tank" at Petsmart makes me think it could be a mix of just about anything, it does have the Melanochromis body shape though.

The other one is probably red zebra (estherae).
