I was looking at starting a 50g with five juvenals of ea. Hap sp.(Obliquidens) & Red Empress's (Protomelas Taeniolatus) in hopes of breading both. Would this work or would there be too much aggression or chance of cross breeding? Thanks for any advice.

I know of someone who has this mix in a 75g, and the Vics are interfering with the Empresses currently. They aren't damaging them, just preventing spawning.

Thanks aharris, that is very helpful. I imagine it best to go with a species tank for breeding. It has been many years since my african setup. I'm thinking I should get my feet re-wet again anyway. I'm leaning towards a hap/peacock display tank setup. All male. Here is my list. Any thoughts?
1) Haplochromis sp. "obliquidens"
1) Haplochromis sp "Ruby Green"
1) Protomelas Taeniolatus "Red Empress"
1) Copadichromis Borleyi "red fin"
1) Copadichromis Borleyi "yellow fin"
1) Aulonocara baenschi "Yellow Regal"
1) Aulonocara sp. "German Red"
1) Labidochromis caeruleus "Yellow Lab"
1) Protomelas sp. "Albino Tiawan Reef"

You do realize that the first two are actually Victorian species right? They are "haps" unlike like the Malawian "haps"
Also, Borleyi and Red empress get fairly large and aggressive and both are colored similarly so You might have a problem keeping both or even either one in a 50g

Yeah, the Empress in question were mine that I had raised and are far from full grown.

Don't be surprised if the Red Empress kills the Borleyi
