Hi all, I bought this cichlid from petco a year ago when it is very small. Now, it grew to 5 inches and started eating my other fishes and cichlid. I would like to refill my fish tank but afraid that my new fish will not survive. Also, can you please help me to ID him? Thanks.
While very similar in appearance to Nimbochromis venustus, the blotch pattern says N. livingstonii, a Malawi predator. Adding smaller fish will just make her that much hungrier.

Nimbochromis venustus probably, or possibly Nimbo. livingstoni.
I'm pretty sure about the venustus though.
I just had to go opposite of Tom. The yellow tint is what makes me think it's venustus.
OK, you convinced me: venustus it is (hey, I'm easy  )
Anyway, lktlkw: It's a predator. It ate once; it'll eat again. :yikes:
Seriously.

If I remember correctly, they both get in the 10-12" range. They're both open water predators from Lake Malawi in the Rift Valley.
yeah i think its a venustus. If you get somthing else just make sure it cant fit in its mouth:wink:

Keep it with other large "Haps" and the tougher mbuna (e.g. kenyii, auratus) from Lake Malawi. You would have some other options, but only if they were raised together. LOL

Hwzcoolboy: This is fish 3 I guess...... Venustus are rather cheap mainly because they breed easy. When they get older they are very very very cool looking. $3-$6 max

Yes i'm pretty possitive its a venustus as well.. I was shopping for fish today and they had a tank of them exactly like that and the label said venustus.. I almost bought one until i was a tank above with a 12in one in it and decided if i wanted my other fish to be alive in a few months i better stay away from it.. lol beautiful fish though.. they had the 12in one in with a clown knife fish, and a large green terror
