read here how the daily lives of many malawians are affected by the loss of many of the snail-eating cichlids in the lake:

ok--the problem is for some reason, i can't copy the part of the web address/link that has the parentheses, but you need that, too. if you paste that whole line into your browser, it works.

I had trouble with the link, too but if you go to http://www.fonz.org/zoogoer
and look in the archives under June 1998 it is there.
Wow! What a great article and interesting magazine! .I might subscribe to the print version of Zoogoer. This artiicle is a prime example of how our altering the environment can have untoward consequences causing an imbalance in the fauna and flora. Schistosomiasis was also exacerbated by the Aswan High Dam in Egypt, which stopped the seasonal flooding and drying in the Nile Valley and alllowed the snails to reproduce in much higher numbers. I have treated people who have schisto and it is a nasty disease :( http://www.fonz.org/zoogoer

My parisitolgy book from college also mentioned the loss of snail eating fish contributing to schistisoma outbreaks... Ferdelance is not kidding about schisto being a truly nasty disease... thanks for the article...
