I have about 140 red turquoise fry that I'm needing to find homes for...I will entertain trades from other local breeders...I prefer to get out of the shipping part of this. I prefer CA/SA Cichlids. I am located 30 minutes east of Cleveland.

Maybe when you pull someone over you should ask them if they'd be interested in buying some fish!

Have you tried any of the bigger non chain stores like RMS for example?

Good luck!

I won't sell any discus to pet stores....I don't think they have the time to dedicate to keeping their water up to par....RMS doesn't seem to be able to keep their discus alive, I wouldn't want that for mine!! I never thought of pushing my fish on the streets.....What an idea!

Hi Oshp132,
Congrats on all the little discus. I am just curious, I have always admired those fish in the LFS but never knew much about them. (But they are ohhh so beautiful) Are they really tough fish?? I always see them in large tanks with other fish that to me seem so tough and I always imagined discus as gentile fishes. Am I way wrong?

Just curious. -I have never known anyone that kept those type of fish, to ask them, and I don't trust the LFS people very much at all. THey will tell you anything just to sell you something.
-Perfect example... I gave 3 of my 8" male jacks to a friend. I told her that they were REAL tough fish and would not tolorate ANYONE else in their tank unless it is a HUGE tank with plenty of territory to bully. (She didn't listen to me) But she went to the LFS and told them what she had and asked what she could put in there with them. They sold her a $50 pleco and it was dead by the 1st morning. I didn't feel too bad for her since I warned her but I felt god awful for the poor pleco. It never stood a chance and the LFS should have known (AND TOLD HER) that.

How much tank space does a discus require? About how large do they get? (I appologize for all the q's, I am just very curious about them. And where better to learn about them then from some one who keeps them- and obviously cares about their conditions.)

I have a 28 gallon coffee table aquarium that I have played with the idea of maybe someday making a home for some discus... do you think that would be enough space for a couple or would that be a bad idea?

Thanks for letting me pick your brain :)

As long as you stick with home bred discus, you will be fine....Don't buy from LFS, unless they are locally bred....They are not tough, unless breeding......My discus are as hardy as an oscar....My largest are approx. 8" and probably slightly over one pound each. I don't keep discus with anything other than clown loaches and bristlenose plecos....

Thanks for the info.
Maybe once I get my larger tank problems all worked out (My large tank sprung a leak so now I have 5 - 7" to 8" Jack Dempseys in a whole bunch of small tanks)... I will start looking into some discus for my coffe table. They would look sooo sharp in there. :m:Its good to know that they can be tough fish, maybe I would consider down the road placing them with a green terror in larger tank but until then, I can only dream! :)

Thanks again for the info and good luck on homing all your little discus. If I lived closer to you, I would buy some from you now.

Ummmmm, I would never put a discus with a green terror.

oh, I must have misunderstood then when you said that they were as tough as an oscar. I thought you ment like they could stand their own "tought". See this is why I go on sites like this, to learn about what is best for the fish. I would had felt awful if I caused harm to a fish because of ignorance. I try to go on sites like this to learn about a certain type of fish before I invest in them. (Otherwise its just not fair to the poor little life at stake.)

Thanks for the insite. What colorful cichlid would you pair with a discus?? I would love to learn.....

I see now, you actually said as "hardy" as an oscar. BIG difference. :)
I am so glad there are sights like this one, it helps us all learn (hopefully before we error) Thanks!!
