View Full Version : Raising Fry
Well jaguars obviously skipped over the article that says they are suppposed to wait 2 weeks until cannabalism starts as yesterday they started munching away at fry. By the time O got them out there is probably 80 to 90.
If someone has some expertise on raising fry please share thsi with me as I have never attempted it.
I have the fry in a 40 litre tupperware container with a 50 wattt heater and a small ac powerhead with a quickfilter attachement as the filter. I am feeding them powdered flake food.
Is there anything else I need to do? What about light. Currently there is none. Water changes etc.

I'm raising some labridens fry. They seem to grow much faster on bloodworms than on flake, and I suspect your jaguarensis fry will as well. Half a bloodworm sticking out the front gives them great exercise, avoiding siblings. I also feed whiteworms once a week, and a batch of microworms is on the way.
PS: Do you have a management plan for the survivors? May be easier to find homes for kittens.
What do you mean Cj?, or there will be to many.

Another good way to get rapid growth from your fry is to feed Baby Brine Shrimp to them.
You can buy the eggs from most lfs', all you have to do is get an old soft drink bottle put in some salt water add an air stone, lots of airation is good. Sit the bottle in your aquarium so it gets heated baby brine need the warmth to hatch, just clip it or tie it so the top of the bottle doesn't slip under the water surface.
After a day the shrimp will have hatched, take out air stone let water settle for 5 minutes, all the shrimp will be toward the bottom and the shells will float to the top. Get some air tube and syphon out the brine shrimp into a cloth avoiding any of the shells.
Then feed them to the fry they will love it and grow damn quick. By the way one tenth of say a tea spoon would be heaps for the amount of fry you have.
Good luck Maingano.

I like to use a 20 gallon tank with a sponge filter-power head. Just feed them good!

I'm a newbie...I have a pair of Jags ( female is 2 inches long - the male is 3 in.) in a 55 gallon tank and we have 1 week old babies ! The parents are super protective of the fry...any hints or ideas on care ? Seperate the fry from the parents or leave as is ? I feed them flake food, frozen brine shrimp...not picky eaters. The fry stay in a "herd " and follow the mother .The tank has lots of gravel and rock formations /caves /large plastic plants.

If this helps at all I have a friend that breeds angelfish on a large scale and they have new fry every 11 days. He has 8 days to let them grow and mingle with the parents and on the 9th day if not seperated the parents will eat the fry.
I just missed out on getting all his fry because they ate them before I got the ok from my parents to set-up another temp tank.
