Hey guys,

I bought two rocks from my LFS for 30 bucks for my new 55 gallon. They are nice rocks, but kinda pricey. I believe they call them "bowl rocks."

My question is if I go to the landscaper to look for rocks, which rocks should I look for and what kind should I stay away from? I've also decided that I will not be putting any lava rocks in my new tank.

Any advice is appreciated!

What rocks you can use are going to depend on what fish you are going to be keeping.

Limestone type rocks (marble, "holey rock", petrified coral, etc) are going to buffer your water and even raise your pH.

Sandstone is inert and a good choice for non-Rift Lake tanks. Slate is usually safe as well.

AVOID: Anything that glistens or looks metallic. Anything that looks like "rust".

Its going to be a Tanganyika tank. Shelldwellers, Cyps and Calvus. The local water here is a PH of 8.

I'd use limestone then.

I would put crushed coral in my filter and then put what ever non rusting rock in the tank. Aquascape in a manner that pleases you, the fish will adapt.
