View Full Version : Hornet Cichlid: M. crabro
I just bought one of these yesterday and he is about 12-13". I am keeping him in a 55 gallon tank. I was wondering if there would be anything I could keep in there with him and if he's too big for that tank. Any chance he could co-exist with a managuense? Please advise.
you can keep him with a managuense but a very very large tank is required. and i dont recomend a 55gallon for one because they are capable pf reaching 18inches.
Hornet.... Bumblebee (potato... potatoe) They are the same fish. The bumble is very mild mannered (unless they are roughed up by other aggressive fish). My Bumble is also around 12-13 inches and he doesn't bother anybody, unless he is bothered first. I have him with labs, a couple peacocks and yess a Fronty.
He is fine... and so is everybody else for that matter.
good luck, and nice choice of fish.

Are we talking about this fish? Maylandi crabro? Or a different one?

I would say we are talking about a Tilipia Buttikoferi

In that case as MB says your 55 is going to be to small for him and you are not going to get anything else in there.
Indeed it is a Tilapia buttikoferi. Bah.
f0x, what size tank do you have? I heard it's not always bad to overstock the tank. But I don't know.

Man am I glad it wasn't M. Crabro! I thought mine was getting big at 7"+. I had never heard of one that was 12-13".
They can get up to 16" in a tank... scary

Wow, what a relief to me! I thought it was mine too. He's maxing out right now at about six.
That is a very nice looking fish. I notice that it said it should be kept with large Central Americans. Sorry, I'm not overly familiar with those guys.
Maybe try to post this in the New World Cichlid section. You may get more responses there too.
Hmmm... you learn something new every day... I am going to have to have a chat with some of the "experts" at my LFS. (a new place where — after a long discussion about additives and boiled peas — I thought actually knew what they were talking about). I keep seeing Crabos labeled as Hornets and Bumblebees, I just took it as another lameo non-latin thing. (kinda like Flameback and fulus are consitantley getting confused at the LFS). Sorry about the bad advice.... I'm kinda ashamed... but at the same time invigorated!
