So I was cleaning my tank last night and bumped my pacostamus with my phython tank cleaner. he goes nuts and knocks over some of the slate I have set up as hiding spots.
after this I take a look at my texas cichlid and his eye is popped out and blood red like its and empty socket. thinking that the slate somehow gouged his eye out. After further inspection his eye still retains the clear part I beleive is called the cornia, It;s almost like he had a huge blood vesal burst.
any ideas on what this could be.
please help I feel bad for the little guy and he's one of my prettiest fish.

i don't know for sure, but it does sound like an injury. the only suggestion that i can make is to treat with aquarium salt and/or melafix.

I have some mela fix so I will try it, I also have a tank I can use as a hospital if need be. At this point I'm at a losse. would the cornia still be there if it somehow got gouged out?

the eye could have been hit and damaged without having been gouged out.

I would go ahead and treat the apparent injury with melafix, although I had a rhoadesii with a similar problem and melafix did not work.
If i had to do it all over again I would treat it by raising the temp to 85F for about 10 days and treat with 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt per 5 gallons of water.
I am going through an ick crisis now, and to add insult to injury my Red empress had a cloudy eye. I say had, as I believe the salt and heat I am applying to my tank now has improved the eye problem significantly.
Right Merlyn?
I am really getting a lot of mileage out of my crisis

Seriously... Matt has found the "cure all" LOL....
But really, for cloudy eye, I have found that Tetracycline (spelling???!) is the best thing to have around. Melafix is okay (don't get me wrong I love the stuff) but you can't go wrong with the TC. It's also good for combatting the Bloat. In fact, it's the only thing I have used that was effective in restoring my tank after more than half the fish took ill with a bout of bloat. My sister changed the water (doing me a favour) and jacked up the PH in doing so, the fish all got sick... etc. Good news is no one died thanks to the TC! YAYAYAYAY!
Wishing you a similar outcome...

Hi Fox, good to hear from you, are you married yet?
the only problem with the tetracycline is that without a hospital tank, my biofilter will crash.

Matt
