I am suddenly experiencing a brownish growth on the gravel in my tank. I have also noticed some on a rock or two and on the tip of some artificial plants. seeme to have showed up nearly overnight. Now the third day it seems to be blossoming and there is noticeably more. Any help or suggestions appreciated.

The tank is established, chemistry is good. Is 40 gallons with five 2 inch cichlids.

Sounds like a brown algea problem. I fixed mine with a really good cleaning and adding more light.

Diatoms, could be light spectrum, high nitrates, silicates or all of the above. Start with trying to reduce your nitrates, don't fear as this is rather normal and most just annoying

Diatoms, algae, lights, nitrates.....

Maybe some pictures will help diagnose. Want to make the correct fix. Thanks

Yep diatoms, they feed on silicates, nitrates and certain spectrums of light. Given time and the correct light green algae will replace them, for now reduce your nitrates.
