What part (if any) does lighting play in keeping my "empty" aquariums alive? I have no live plants. I add a specific amount of pure ammonia daily to "feed" the bacteria, but is it necessary to keep the lights on as well?
Thanks, Sam

i would say none...you only need to add light if you want to grow algae.

Thank you Gypsy!
That was my feeling on the subject, but thought I should check it out first. My electric bill is high enough as is without adding to it unecessarily!

Your bacterial cycle would end with the production of Nitrate if things stay as they are. No problem there without any fish in the tank, but the addtion of light would allow algae to grow and take advantage of that Nitrate and thereby complete (or nearly so) the cycle.
