Nice.
If they breed, you KNOW they'll have a home.
how many did you get?
Good luck!

The guy got a small colony of rufus several years ago and had a "breeding pair" left over from that colony that he gave me. They are pretty old, so we'll see if they actually breed for me. He also had a tank of maybe twenty five 8 month old sub-adults. He gave me 1M:3F from that tank.

I will keep you in mind, but I have a debt to pay to some friends that have been overly generous to me in the recent past and they come first.
Victorian lovers are really lousy capitalists. I can't remember the last time I paid for a Victorian and I've probably given away 10 times as many vics as I've sold myself.

Cool Kevin,
I hope you get them breeding as I have lost a lot of species do to illness that I have been battling for almost a full year on and off (more on then off). I believe that there might be a contaminant of something in the water source as I am currently looking into that with water samples and sending them to the lab. So keep them going. As other then my self I know of know one else that has them and with my problems I been having it is not to promising of me being able to keep anything and most likely have to move if there is a contaminant in the water.

Keep those H. limax going there Matt. My breeders died as well and I only have maybe 6 fry of them left. When I get this problem of mine corrected I will get back in to the swing of thing with the Vics. Also I know of a friend of mine that would like some of your limax as I had informed him they were from my breeders.

Between you and Matt I am leaning towards trying victorians one day. I really like the colors and the activity I has seen.

Cool,
hope you do hop on board of keeping and breeding Lake Victoria Basin and satellite lake species to try and aid and preserve there lineage to the true species as best as we can.

so kevin, any updates?...i see you've got one of the males as your avatar.

Well let's see. The adult pair are in the 180 gallon tank. The male hangs out in the lower right front corner and the female in the upper rear center. It seems they must have had a disagreement and are not willing to talk things out.
The juvenile 1M:3F are in a 55 gallon tank with the blue rock kribs. The male has very quickly outgrown the females and he harasses them constantly. So I am down to 1M:2F. But with the young adults hormones raging, all it took was a 6 hour power outage Tuesday night to put them in the mood for love (I guess they had to stay warm somehow). Your timing is amazing......I saw the tiny little female with a tiny little bulge in the throat just last night.

The closest I'll get to New York is visiting the folks near Allentown, PA. We built a front porch on our house a few years ago and imbibe adult beverages every summer Friday night with whichever neighbors show up. So that may effect your arrival time.
I'm not terribly optimistic about this first batch of fry. The female maybe only 1.25" TL so we'll see how the first time mom does.

(I do have P. "crimson tide" fry, H. "redback scrapper" fry, and a holding "red tail sheller")

i'm thinking that maybe my male will shake things up with your adult pair. you might also consider adding some latifasciata to the tank...i had some success that way.

StructureGuy,
Great job finding them! He looks awesome! I wish you luck breeding them. I hope you have millions of little rufus as I am not aware of many left in the hobby.
I can support you statement about giving fish away. The red tailed shellers you provided are doing great! They haven't bred yet but are not quite big enough.
After you take care of all those previous requests I would like to get some little guys to try and breed. I would love to be able to get them back into the hobby. They are my favorite Victorian.
Congratulations!

*sigh* i waited too long to get my remaining male to kevin...i lost him last week in a tank disaster--a lower-level tank where i left the lights off for several days after cleaning the filter. the filter shut off without my noticing it, and of course, that is the one cichlid tank that doesn't have a back-up filter.:(

Mine refused to breed for me just like the last time I had them. So on Monday July 2, I shipped them all to GAS in San Antonio, Texas. They were guaranteed to arrive there by noon the next day but didn't. So they spent the fourth of July in a warehouse. They arrived at 9:30 am on July 5 all alive. That's 64 hours in a box in a bag and no deaths. Amazing. We'll see if Greg can get them to breed.
