I love em. They catch alot of waste, and once full, squeeze em off in tap water, and they are clean!! fish like to peck at food that gets caught on the mossball. I highly reccomend them

uhhh, you can cut off chunks when they grow and have a bunch of small ones, or ive heard you can spread out the whole thing like a thin blanket.

yeah. They are pretty good filters. Moss balls actually arent made of moss, it's thick algae. My plecos don't eat it neither does my chinese algae eater.

how many do you have and how big is the tank

I have 1 big one in my 20g long tank. I just put it there because thats the tank with the most fish. I might go to the lfs tonight and get some small ones for the other tanks. But yeah, the moss balls arent really demanding. I have had mine for a bout 2 months and I have had no light for about a month and a bit in the tank because my i.d shark hates light and flips out, and it still grows and is healthy.:xmas3: :D  :)

So if I put a mossball in my tank but leave the light on most of the day would it get out of control? I've seen'em and wondered about checking one out but I'm paranoid about having uncontrollable moss taking over.

ohh, you'll be fine. The moss balls can be cut in half and sold to a friend/ lfs or put in a separate tank if it does get big. These are not loose messy things. They are japans national plant. The moss balls stay in a tight clump because they naturally roll in japans oceans. They do net "shed" at all.
No downside to mossballs. Get a few!!

actually, its thick algae. I dont know why the hell they call it moss. But apparently, you can "rip" up the moss ball to blanket it on stuff, like driftwood or rock. But it's a loose rolling ball.

I read that they're actual balls of java moss and they are great for algae control.

interesting... i don't have any algae in my tank but i would like some moss on the driftwood, i think that would look pretty cool. haven't seen these things around though, this is the first i've heard of them

I have heard there are java moss as well. I have oft been interested in trying them.

I've seen them at a couple of my lfs and always thought they were a rock or something with moss grown on it 'cuz they're so round. I don't think the ones here are java moss, these look more fuzzy but are about the same color. My large tree stump has a tiny little bit of moss starting to grow on the top closest to the light and I like the way it looks so I think a moss ball would look even more cool.

Ok it's settled. We're all going to our lfs to get a moss ball of our very own.
