Its part of a filtration system usually with a wet/dry bio-tower.... Rather than trying to explain what a sump is... check this link.

a canister filter is a closed system. reliant on keeping air out of the system to limit noise, and to provide a prime.

they do not add air to the system (unless using a spray bar, and are generaly limited by size)

a sump is not limited by size, requires no vacume/prime, generaly priovides a higher gass transfer. also generaly a larger louder pump is used in a sump.

very rarely is a sump smaller than 20% the size of a tank
generaly a canister remais close to the same size regardless, someone can correct me if wrong, but I believe 5 gallons is the biggest canister available in a NORMAL pet store. while a canister can be as small as 1-2 liters. a sump must be 20% or more the volume of the tank, unless extrodinary measures are taken. (smaller pipes, one way valvs, external pump.
