Every time I see someone in a forum show a picture of a "purple princess" it looks different from the last guy that showed a picture of a purple princess. That's one of the problems with common names, I guess. Do you have a pic, 6stang9?

I've had the same experience as Kevin. I've seen 2 different looking fish for sale on aquabid under purple princess. one looked an awful lot like a Ptyochromis salmon...

This is the other fish I've seen referred to that way (cited by samak in the post cited by SGM)

it was sold to me as h. polli. i dont know how to link stuff but if you type in "polli" in the quick search and go to the thread named "new around her got pics" posted on 6-4-04 by peacock 79, the second pic, top middle fish and the 7th pic named last one is the fish i have. peacock 79 also called it h. polli when asked about it in that thread. any info on this fish would be helpful. thanks

Wow, is this getting more confusing. I've never heard of Astatoreochromis aluaudi referred to as a "purple princess". And I've never seen a picture of a supposed "purple princess" that looked anything like Ptyochromis salmon.

The purple princess I've seen pictures of on the internet is usually a rather large (not particularly attractive) deep bodied fish that is a grey color with just a few little red highlights on the fins. I'll see if I can find a pic again. I know that several guys in the Ohio Cichlid Association claimed to have them.

The Haplochromis sp "polli" is a small very attractive bright yellow victorian that I've never heard called a purple princess. Some of the victorian gurus in the Hill Country Cichlid Club near San Antonio have them.

i agree, this is comfusing, a guy on nycichlids.com sent me a pic from alloddballaquatics of a purple princes that he thought looked similar to my fish. also another local fish store in worcester ma has them and he also called them h. polli. but daves rare fish has a pic of "h. polli" and it is the yellow fish and it says it is a dwarf. my fish is 6" and still growing. bright blue on the lower half including the lips, green on the upper half and a slight red blaze on its head. it also has a black bar through its eye downward? thanks for your help

Store across the bay called 'em that. I tried to correct them, but they already know everything.

I've seen those come up on aquabid. I also seem to remember seeing them on a few stock lists. i haven't been fish shopping for a long time, but i'll see if i can dig those up...

Hap. polli aren't remotely purple if memory serves, are they?

That's what Samaki ID'ed them as on C-F and I tend to agree.

If he thinks that and you think that, i think some brains are colliding. :) Ive got calliptera on the brain - I'd actually just been looking at some calliptera last week (someone is scheming a big a$$ tank.... i'm thinking it's time i got a 125 or larger).

Google image search for it. It's pretty common. (also, not Victorian. They live in and around Lake Malawi).
