i would have 2 HOBs....a penguin 200 and a AC50 as well as a fluval 405 or a FX5. would my fish be able to survive on the HOBs if the canister ever broke? is this a good filtering setup? any suggestions?

I have two canisters on my 125. I'd think that just two HOBs probably wouldn't be enough long term to handle that load, but you'd be fine til you got the canister or other filter replaced. I have two HOBs (emperor 400s) on my heavily stocked 75 gallon and they work hard but are enough for that size.

I think it would be fine ... considering I've been running a 150 gallon with just 2 HOB's (AC110's) for over a year (but I do have a powerhead with polisher and two fairly large sponge filters) ... and its heavily stocked. Water changes is the most important thing ... I change my water so often that I'm safe, my nitrates never have a chance to build up.
