View Full Version : Really pissed off!!!
The LFS's out here in Ottawa are encouraging kids to buy "Nemo" (or in other words a clownfish). The bloody owners are trying to convince parents that Saltwater fish are easy to keep and that all they need is a 20-gallon tank to do it!!???? They are advocating nano-reef systems to newbies!!! :jaw:
Anyone who knows aquariums knows that nanoreefs shouldn't be attempted by anyone who has never kept fish before, they are incredibly labour intensive.
The damn fish store and their money making agenda are going to accomplish nothing but hurting kids feelings when "nemo" dies!!!
I'm so friggin pissed off.

Yeah the LFS in my area are wall to wall clown fish also. They have 3 gallon tanks set up to diisplay them and I'm sure that many people will buy that same set up.
It's hard to have a passionate hobby and try to make it profitable....it always seems to turn to "business". The passion for knowledge and happiness is replaced with a drive for profits and success. Few business are willing to work and combine all of that into one marketable package.

Wow! I haven't seen that, and the KC Star ran an article that gave out profiles of all the fish you would need to re-create the dentist's tank. They interviewed people who worked at big-time aquariums. They told people what size tank they would need and how much the entire set-up would cost (and they got it accurate). They advised against ever buying a Moorish Idol (good plan). The explained that salt-water is an expensive hobby and not for the casual person. They even pointed out that people should buy captive bred fish because of the evils of over-fishing and cyanide collection and reef destruction.
I'm now really impressed that they ran that article and gave it front page in the lifestyles section.
I haven't seen the movie but in my shark shopping ventures that would explain why the clowns are so popular and 33 starter set ups are at the front of the store.
I sure wish they would make a movie about O& G Risk management, maybe I could buy another tank. :)

I do a lot of aquatic farming and distribution, now we don't breed clown fish or any salt water fish currently, however we do distribute to LFS in my area and have bumped price on them significantly in order to prevent the loss of life due to uneducated minds. Heres the catch, We also do set-ups and maintenance and will sell our fish cheaper to our cliental. Our LFS distribute our cards and with the additional cost of maintenance and set-up evaluation they to can house "Nemo".

It's good to know that some folks are looking out for "Nemo."
