(This being based off my comments in another post, thought this would be fun, please add your own too!)
You know your a fish geek when....
...you think of work as the time you spend in between water changes.
...after a hard day you wonder if a little squirt of Stress Coat in your drink would make you feel better.
...you check the nutrition labels on your fish food, but don't even bother when it's something you're planning to eat.
You know your a fish geek when....
...you open the fridge and you see earthworms next to the butter, blood worms next to the cheese, brine shrimp next to the mayo, and a bottle of Cycle on the side door by the Ranch.
...you have more fish medicine and additives than you do your own vitamins and perscriptions.
...you get all excited and point out when you see a fish tank in a movie and your spouse just rolls their eyes. (at least mine does)
You know your a fish geek when....
...you're at the LFS and you hear the advice he/she gave a customer and either laugh or pull the customer aside and tell them the real deal.
...you try to figure a way you might be able to keep fish in a pool.
And at least the last one for now, you know your a fish geek when.......you're up at 1am on a Sat. night posting comments on a great Cichlid Forum!!!

I'm with you on this one. I saw that big tank in "Deuce Bigalow" and went nuts. Especially when he claimed a marine fish had Malawi bloat  .
Here's one more: You know your a fish geek when, even though you live in a severe storm area, you park the car in the driveway because you have tanks in the garage.
SGypsyMermaid
09-02-2002, 11:01 AM
lol--i watched that movie just because of the tank, too. what about the part where he filled the tank right after siliconing it, before the glue could cure. even if it didn't fall apart--the fish would've died from those fumes!

you know you're a fish geek when you have to decide between your favorite restaurant and those cute new fish at the lfs...and you end up having cheerios for dinner, and have to find a spot for your new acquisitions.

:D told ya!
That's great. I'll go home for lunch everyday and eat peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches, or cereal. Then at the end of the week, I'll tell my wife that I saved $5 a day by eating at home, and that entitles me to spend $25 on fish. I don't think she likes my math though. :)

Yes, I too resemble those remarks! Here's my contribution.
You know you're a fish geek when...
You ask at the lfs for a Synodontis multipuntatus and the sales girl says to you, "What?? Is that a disease or something??" (Actually happened to me.)
You carry pictures of your tank and individual fish in your wallet, instead of your kids or spouse.
You have more than one setup in your home, and you're trying to get them to set one up at work, too.
You chat amiably during lunch with co-workers about breeding habits and spawing among your fish (and they are non-fish people).
You know where every fish store is within at least a 25 mile radius, and you even know of some as far away as 50 miles or more.
You feed the fish before you feed your family.
You call home during the day to see how the fish are doing. (My husband works nights.)
You wake up in the middle of the night to get a drink/go to the bathroom and you get the flashlight out to look at the fish, so as not to disturb them.
You have a doctor's/dentist's appointment and start to tell them how "relaxing" a fish tank would be in their waiting area.
Most of your purchases on your last credit card statement were for the lf stores.
You read the fish food ingredients label to make sure it is wholesome, and then grab a burger for yourself at a fast food restaurant.
You have about 5 different fish magazine subscriptions.
You send pictures of your new tank setup/new fish to all your friends and relatives in emails.
You can't wait to see what new posts are on CichlidForums.com.
You have more pictures of your fish than of your family.
You feed your cat (feline, that is) algae chips as a snack. (Mine loves them!)

You know you're a fish geek when:
Family and friends who know you have a sick fish, call up to see how the fish is doing.
You wonder about your fishes' happiness.
You think your fish should have a boyfriend/girlfriend. (My yellow lab needs mates!)
You cry when a fish dies. :bawl:

"I'd love to go out, but tonight is gravel vac night."
"A free week in Paris? Um... lemme see if I can find someone to watch my fish".
(related to previous)"We've only known eachother for 8 years. I don't know if I'd trust you to take care of them...."
"Well, Sorry. Paris is off. One of my wild-caughts is holding".
"Swap meet.... (Homer Simpson doughnut noise)."
You go to buy flowers for your planters, come home with one petunia and 85 pounds of rock that will never, ever, ever see outside again.
(related to the last one) You have a canning pot on the stove. Someone asks what's cooking and you say "Rocks" without thinking that it's odd to have rocks on the stove.

You know your a fish geek when.
You go to a resteraunt and steal food to bring home for your fish.
A friend of mine went to a wedding this weekend in a posh resteraunt in the mountains. They were serving crab legs. What does he do? Wraps crab legs up in a napkin puts them in his suit jacket pocket and brings them home for his Fahaka puffer. Meanwhile at the other side of the table his girlfriend literally wanted to kill him.
I was on the floor listening to this story. As apparently as the night went on the crab didn't smell so good.

It's only been 4 months but I had to bump this.
I've been feeling particularly geeky ranting to my family & friend's about the promo for that new show coming out this fall "Surface" Where the kid puts the "alien" egg (obviously bamboo shark egg!) In his parents huge-ass saltwater tank. Then his mom walks by later while chatting on the phone and says "where are the fish?" and then wanders away as calmly as you might say "the sun is out."!! Causing me to rant about how NO ONE with a tank like that containing expensive marine fish would be that calm about them all dissappearing!!!!
So anyway, You know you're a fish geek when you rant about inaccurate depictions of fish-keeping in commercials.

...you enjoy watching what my husband has labeled as "fish porn" (AKA your friends' videos of spawning mouthbrooding cichlids).
...your seat at the dinner table is the one facing away from the tank so that you talk to your guests/husband and not stare at the fish all night.
...you think entertaining your friends after dinner entails feeding worms to the fish and watching them fight.
...you turn down a night out because you have to spend the evening doing a photo shoot with your fish
...you use up three memory cards on your digi cam in that one night

you know your airport as well as the local taxi drivers.
you have 20 Styrofoam boxes, you're asked "do you need all these?" and you think thats a silly question.
you start buying dechlorinator in 10lbs pails and food in 5lbs buckets.
you start looking for used tanks on craigslist.
you go to all the local fish stores every two weeks just to see what they've changed.
you yell at your holding females when they look like they are going for a pellet, "HEY, stop right there!"
you are asked "when is this hose going to be off my kitchen sink" and you reply "in a couple hours when all the water changes are done"
you start looking at rocks on the side of the road and thinking they would look nice in your fish tank.
you actually stop to pick those rocks up off the side of the road.
your friends and family start making up their own scientific names.
your friends and family actually get some of the scientific names right!
you sit here and think of ten things to add to this thread...

both people must be present at feeding time, or the other person gets upset they missed it : P
my boyfriend request either i do only 1/3 water changes on the tanks or if I want to do 50% would i please forfeit my shower for the day to keep the water bill down

You look at houses for sale with a different eye than your typical potential buyer...
Like:
- Is there an available space I can convert into a fishroom?
- Is the plumbing layout suitable for convenient water changing?
- What are the water taxes like in this town?
- Is there a good spot to put a nice big in-wall tank?
- Does the yard already have a fence? (so I can put a pond in!)
- Better yet, does the house already have a pond?
- Ok, even a swimming pool will do (they can be converted, right?)
- Does the house have any aquariums in it I might be able to talk the owner into leaving behind?
- Do the neighbors have any fish?
- Are there any bylaws stopping me from converting the whole garage into an aquarium?
etc...
What? Sorry, what was that about bedrooms hon?

you actually stop to pick those rocks up off the side of the road.

Wow, this actually brought a huge smile to our faces. That is how we met, just it was the other way around. She worked at petland. We have been together for 7 years, married 4 and have a combined total volume of over 10k gallons indoors and somewhere between 300 to 500 children. What was bad was I worked for a LFS (still work for them too) and would drive 3 hours to Deerfield Beach just to go buy an air line or a gang valve or something small and not really needed, and would ask so many questions just to talk to her. She finally caught onto my ploy and drove 3 hours to save me the trip of having to come get something that night from her store.
BTW, Our first date was a lecture hosted by some members of the American Fisheries Society (AFS). Neither of us know what they were talking about but we were talking about drip acclimating a FW fish to a SW tank. :m:

You know your a fish geek when.........you go with your sister to a craft mall to help her buy something nice for a baby shower. While she is looking at Baby Blankets, you wander over to a shell display and think your in hog heaven snort snort lolol ( ^..^ ).........I came upon a fabulous looking shell piece with openings at the top for my Apisto or even my Mbuna to squeeze their little hienies in:D. Most likely will go into my planted tank tho. The lady at the register said Oh is this for your Terrarium? I said NO its for my Aquarium and it will be perfect for my cichlids to play in. She most likely said under her breath, WHAT A GEEK:rofl:. LOLOLOL It's about 7 inches in length and its all one piece not glued together. Cost a whopping $7.00 I would have paid three times that for it. Thanks for looking. Geek Julia :D:jump:

Ok been awhile since this thread has been used so I am resusitating it. Today I knew I was a total GEEK. Husband and I are winterizing our home getting ready for the snow:xmas4:. We have a large refrigerator in the garage which houses various cartons of POP and BEER and a few bottles of Asti and that about it. I told hub we are running this big refrigerator for pop and beer and it's lunacy. I put the pop in the house along with his beer and said UNPLUG it. I told him " now I can get a power head and a new filter" ( when the time comes lol) he said " a power head " then laughed and snickered. Well Julia being Julia I said "ha ha ha flyboy keep working":sygypsy:. I did find something that I can use in my cichness tho:faint:. We use to have a swimming pool, I found a water pump that I use to use to suck off water from the winter cover. I am going to use it in my fish tanks right along with my Python. I will have to clean it well I do know this. I will let it suck a few buckets of water and bleach or something. I know I only used it a few times and it is battery operated not electric. Takes 4 D cell I believe and will use it only at times when I need a good sand vac maybe, I dunno yet, I have to see it in action here and where it can come in handy:razz:. Also one more GEEK story. I made a tuna noodle casserole yesterday, we like peas in it lolol, just as I was about to throw a handful of frozen peas inside I stopped and said OMG I need these for the Saulosi. LMAO here. Now that I rambled, tell me your GEEK story plz. Julia :D:nyah:
