Sciaenochromis fryeri, aka electric blue hap or electric blue ahli. I can't make a positive id from your picture, but it could be S. fryeri.

is that the true color of the fish--looks a bit pale to be an electric blue. does the fish normally look a deep electric blue color?

Maybe this one is a juvi and hasn't gotten it's full coloring...
but this guy sort of looks like some kind of peacock to me

The fish is only 2 or 21/2 inches long so I suppose it could still be a juve, but it has always had a somewhat dark tint to it, never the extremely shiny bright blue coloring that I was expecting....is it possible that it's a melanochromis chipokae???

Looks like a wait and tell. He might be a Copadichromis or an Otopharynx of some kind.
I am moving this to the ID forum for a better response.
Hi Kris--Welcome to the boards.
Sure looks like S. fryeri to me, too. "...always had a somewhat dark tint to it"....How long have you had this fish? Did it already display a shade of blue when you got it?

Always may not be the best phrase....I have had the fish for about 6 months...and when I first got it, it had very little blue color to it....gradually it became more colored and developed more of a shine...however, it was not until I introduced another african into the tank (melanochromis johanni or Psuedotropheus saluosi not sure) that he really took on a lot of color.
While his colors may not be striking right now, they're nevertheless there. Couple that with the overall body shape and the distinctive white-blazed dorsal fin and the orange/yellowish tint on the anal fin typical of at least one naturally-occurring population of the species, and I can't imagine it's anything but S. fryeri.
If it helps, there is a picture of my electric blue here...

Sorry about the glare off the glass...

I'm going to go with some type of peacock. The yellow in the tail-fin does not seem right for a S. fryeri. Could be an Oto of some sort. Also the vertical barring is not something I have seen in S. fryeri. Not a melanochomis or Pseudeotroph for sure.

Went to my local cichlid dealer today, and I saw a Sci. fryeri that looked just like the one pictured above. I questioned one of the staff and she assured me is was a S. fryeri. It was wild because it looked exactly like the above photo. I still would not bet the farm on it though.

Matt

The best looking adult S. fryeri "ahli" I have did not color up until he was almost two years old! That one certainly looks like an ahli.
